A known gaming industry insider claims that a Switch 2 port for Red Dead Redemption 2 exists, along with rumored next-gen updates for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. However, the insider had no timetable for when a Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 could arrive on Nintendo’s latest console, leaving fans to speculate on its potential timing.
The news followed additional rumors suggesting that Red Dead Redemption 2 could receive next-gen updates for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. However, it remains unclear whether these would be free updates or separate purchases. The rumors began spreading after some fans pointed out that the Steam store description for Red Dead Redemption 2 had been altered to remove any mention of its past awards or scores. While Red Dead Redemption 2 can technically be played on a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility with the PS4 and Xbox One versions, the game currently does not utilize each console’s upgraded hardware, which can result in blurry textures and a capped frame rate of 30 FPS.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Could Be Coming To The Switch 2
Though rumors about Red Dead Redemption 2 should be taken with a grain of salt, an insider claimed that the Switch 2 could be a new platform for Rockstar Games to work with. On Twitter, gaming industry insider NateTheHate responded to a question that asked if a Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 was in development alongside the next-gen console updates. NateTheHate responded affirmatively and claimed that both exist. However, NateTheHate had no updates on the release timing for either a Switch 2 port or the PS5 and Xbox next-gen updates. In response, fans took their guesses at when Red Dead Redemption 2 could launch on the Switch 2. Others speculated whether the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions would be free next-gen upgrades of the PS4 and Xbox One ports, or if a separate purchase would be needed.
While the Switch 2 is popular for its first-party offerings and backward compatibility with most original Switch games, its upgraded hardware compared to its predecessor could be a factor for developers to consider. In short, the Switch 2 can utilize Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology to increase the performance of demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077.
As of this writing, Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed if Red Dead Redemption 2 will receive a Switch 2 port. However, with Rockstar potentially shifting its marketing and development focus to Grand Theft Auto 6, time will tell if or when Red Dead Redemption 2 will get another release.
